The question everybody is asking is, do Obama will finally put an end to the blind US support to Israel? Unquestionably, the hiring of George Mitchell special envoy means at least that he will take it very seriously. However, the real question is: will Obama and the Democratic Party liberate their selves from the Israeli Lobby (AIPAC and far right Christian coalition). After winning the primaries the first thing that the new president did was visiting AIPAC´s headquarters to "make clear" his position regarding the conflict. So, it seem like he fully acknowledges (and fears) its political power.
So, are we going to see more of the same? Maybe not, maybe the only way to counterbalance the power of the Israeli lobby is another Israeli lobby. J Street might be the answer. The new PAC's goal "is to demonstrate that there is meaningful political and financial support available to candidates for federal office from large numbers of Americans who believe a new direction in American policy will advance U.S. interests in the Middle East and promote real peace and security for Israel and the region".
